Light and composition

In the lecture we were informed about the different terms for lighting and composition, we were given a task to look at 4 images from our choosing, this could be from a film, game or even a piece of art work, we were then advised to look at how the lighting of two of the images that we chose displayed the different effects of lighting. And then the two other images of our choosing we have to show the differences in the composition of the images.

Different terms for lighting are:

  • Absorption - (goes through)
  • Diffused reflection - (textured, hits the surface at different points)
  • Bounced light - (reflecting off a surface)
  • Reflection - (casting back light)
  • Refraction - (change of direction of light)
Different terms for composition are:

  • Rules of thirds - ( a subject with guide lines and their focus points)
  • Iconic - (virtual symmetry)
  • Divine proportions - ( Golden section)
  • Cross - ( opposing force)
  • "L" - ( frame within a frame)
Different terms for shadows are:
  • Dynamic occlusion - ( casting shadow from a object)
  • Sub-surface scattering  - (inner glow, scatter inside the surface)
