Bug research (Beetles)

(This image is good for my insect position)

Here are some reference images, some research of beetles

Composition in imagery

(The image without composition lines)

  (The image with Composition lines)

This is a scene from the movie Prometheus. The composition in this image draws the audience in to  the centre of the image because of the face.  The scene has very strong focal points using the cross composition.  The image from the top is clearer than the bottom due to change in lighting.

 (The image with composition lines)

This is a movie poster for the Disney film "The nightmare before Christmas". The composition in this image that I can see is the "L" composition. The hill that the character is posing on is positioned on the right side of the image, this is were the main focus is drawn to. Also I believe there is another composition in this image and that is the "Iconic"composition. The centre slightly at the top of the image were the hill tip is curled shows the iconic composition as this is a main focus point. The hill with the moon behind seems to draw the eye to this area using these two compositions.

Lighting

This image is from a scene in the new movie called Maze runner the scorch trials. The light in this scene is being produced by the sun above in which the light from the sun is creating a light source called "bounced light"  the bounced light is reflected from the ruin building that looks to be quite a smooth surface, the light does not seem to have scattered far. The characters in this image are formed as silhouettes due to this lighting effect.

This is a movie poster image from the movie Harry potter and the deathly hallows. In this image there are two sources of where the light is produced, one is coming from the sun and the second is coming from the fire that is burning on the hogwarts castle. Diffused Reflection lighting is shown in this image by the sunlight hitting the water. This is then casting the reflection of the burning hogwarts castle on the rippling water. (Fresnel effect)

Light and composition

In the lecture we were informed about the different terms for lighting and composition, we were given a task to look at 4 images from our choosing, this could be from a film, game or even a piece of art work, we were then advised to look at how the lighting of two of the images that we chose displayed the different effects of lighting. And then the two other images of our choosing we have to show the differences in the composition of the images.

Different terms for lighting are:

  • Absorption - (goes through)
  • Diffused reflection - (textured, hits the surface at different points)
  • Bounced light - (reflecting off a surface)
  • Reflection - (casting back light)
  • Refraction - (change of direction of light)
Different terms for composition are:

  • Rules of thirds - ( a subject with guide lines and their focus points)
  • Iconic - (virtual symmetry)
  • Divine proportions - ( Golden section)
  • Cross - ( opposing force)
  • "L" - ( frame within a frame)
Different terms for shadows are:
  • Dynamic occlusion - ( casting shadow from a object)
  • Sub-surface scattering  - (inner glow, scatter inside the surface)

Insect sihouettes and iteration designs

Both of these silhouettes pieces have been created using Photoshop. I believe my silhouette designs are forming into a beetle insect because it looks like my designs are very bulky and shell like insects with horn features. I have drew a silhouette that is based on a beetle and then I copied it and each time I have added different features to each of my designs.

Alchemy silhouettes

The two designs shown here have been created using a programme called Alchemy. The mirror tool has been used on both of my designs , from the two designs you can visualize different shapes that can create a few silhouettes of insects.

Insect leg iteration designs

These designs are my own creations of different styles for insect legs. I used the same method of using a silhouette and then drawing on top of the silhouette to form an arrangement of styles. The design that I most like is 4th drawing on the right, that design reminds me of a beetle. It looks like the insect leg is more powerful and heavier than the other designs, the concept of a powerful insect is appealing to me.

Insect silhouettes and Iterations designs

These are some quick sketches from a few silhouettes that I had created. I  used a simple digital black line brush and drew over the silhouettes and formed the insect designs.
